Early in my career as a CTO, I believed my worth came from knowing every technical detail and holding the answers to every operational puzzle. Where we lose our way
When I mentor talented engineers struggling to reach the next level, I see them retreat into what feels safe: pure task execution. They double down on technical output because measuring output feels reassuring.
Yet, focusing strictly on output creates a dangerous vulnerability. When we isolate our work to isolated deliverables, we make ourselves replaceable by the very automated tools we build.
True career longevity does not come from out-coding an algorithm. It comes from stepping into the messiness of human collaboration—listening, building trust, and solving ambiguous problems across teams.
Reframing your purpose: anchor your work in real human impact.
Look at your current project and ask yourself: whose lives, workflows, or daily struggles are genuinely improved by this effort?
Connect technical decisions directly to human outcomes. If your work does not ease a burden for your colleagues or customers, re-examine why it matters.
Shift your narrative: lead with empathy for the problem and the people involved, then explain the technical path forward.
Consider how two different leaders describe their role during times of change:
Task-focused perspective: “I directed the team, assigned their daily tasks, and ensured they hit their project deadlines.”
Human-focused perspective: “We aligned around a shared vision, supported each other through skill gaps, and empowered team members to step up and lead key initiatives.”
While both approaches accomplish the task, only the second builds a sustainable human system. Machines can manage tasks, but only human leaders can inspire trust, foster growth, and bring out the best in people.
Lasting job security comes from empathy and connection—understanding the real business challenges and bridging divides between different disciplines.
